Fruit in Schools (FIS) and Health Promoting Schools (HPS)

The fruit in schools prgramme currently runs in several low decile schools in the Taupo district. All children in these schools are provided with one piece of fresh fruit everyday during the school week. It is a short term programme run over three years and identifies four key issues which the school must work towards improving: Nutrition, Physical activity, Smokefree and Sunsmart.

Health promoting schools is a framework and process based on thirty years of evidence based research which offers schools a whole school approach to support and enhance the emotional, physical and moral wellbeing of the school. Becoming a health promoting school allows the short term benefits of the fruit in schools programme to become sustainable.

Cafe delivers these programme on behalf of Toi te Ora and the Lakes DHB. The HPS/FIS advisors role is to support the schools in understanding the health prmoting schools process and provide them with professional development and networking for health related issues.
