Always ask why you are being searched

The police can search you,your bag or your car

  • If you let them, they have a search warrent, they arrest you and intend to lock you up
  • If you don't agree to a search you must say so, silence is taken as agreeing
  • If you are a female unsually only a policewomen can search you.

Police Questioning

You have the right to remain silent, but you must give your correct name and address and sometimes date of birth. You can talk to a lawyer before doing anything else.

If the police want you to go with them always ask if you have been arrested becasue you don't have to go with them unless:

You have been arrested, you are under 17 years of age and are drunk, high or at risk of being hurt or hurting someone.

You have the right to talk to a free lawyer, tell the police you want to speak with one on the Bill of Rights list.

Remember

  • Stay calm and dont get smart
  • Try to get someone to witness what the police do
  • Try to get the police officers name, number and police station they work at.
